The making got cheap. The deciding didn’t.
AI can build almost anything now — the code, the page, the game. So the valuable skill is no longer the making. It’s the part a machine can’t do for you: noticing a real problem, deciding what to make, knowing what it should feel like, and seeing what’s wrong with it. That’s design. It’s the human element, and it’s exactly the thing school was never built to teach. So that’s what we teach.
We teach kids to design like Leonardo.
Leonardo da Vinci filled notebooks his whole life — drawing what he saw, comparing one thing to another, designing on paper long before anything got built. That habit, noticing and sketching and thinking with a pen, is the engine under all of it. Every SPARK kid gets a journal and does the same: they write what they notice, draw what they want, and design the thing by hand before we build a single piece of it. A drawing they made is theirs in a way a screen never is.

Notice, draw, figure it out.
Leonardo da Vinci filled thousands of notebook pages — drawing what he saw, designing on paper long before anything got built. We're not teaching kids to be Leonardo. We're teaching the habit he's famous for: thinking on paper, by hand. Every Spark Builder gets a journal and does the same — write what you notice, draw what you want, figure it out first.


The kid directs. The AI builds. The kid judges.
The kid says what they want; we build exactly that and show them. Then: “what do you notice? what’s right? what’s missing?” They tell us, we fix it, we give it back. When something breaks — that’s the best moment, a real problem they actually care about — we ask why, and have it explained at their level. (Their own page knows who they are, so the explanation fits them: the thing one teacher can’t do for thirty kids.) They learn by fixing real things, not by filling out a worksheet.
They author their own corner — instead of being fed one.
Most of the internet renders a feed AT a kid — built to keep them watching, the same way for everyone, a little pocket-world they didn’t choose. We do the opposite: every builder gets a Home Base — their own page at theirname.sparkbuilders.org, with their face as the home star and each build a star around it. It holds everything they’ve made, safe, with their parent able to see all of it. They learn how the internet works by making their piece of it, not by being handed someone else’s. It’s one of the only real answers to “kids and the internet” that makes the kid the author, not the audience.
It rebuilds the thing the feed wears down: attention.
Screens trained kids to be handed the next thing, fast. SPARK is mostly pen, paper, and talking — sustained attention on a real problem, by hand, with people. The only screen moment is reacting to what the AI built. We’re rebuilding the muscle underneath everything else: the ability to stay with a hard thing long enough to finish it.
A kid notices something real, designs it, and makes a tool that actually helps a person — then sees their own face glowing as the home star of a little universe they built. That’s confidence you can’t fake and a skill that lasts. It’s the kind of thing every parent would want for their kid — so we’re putting how we do it out in the open, for free.
